The holidays are a special time of year!
And some of the things that make the holidays so special can also make them especially challenging for dogs and their humans. The decorations and the food can be tempting and hazardous; the social events can be exciting, overwhelming, distracting, and stressful; and the changes of routine can be unsettling and unpredictable.
With all of this in mind, one of the best things you can do to help you and your dog enjoy the holiday season is to teach them to settle down, quietly and happily, and on cue.
Almost all dogs like to spend a good amount of their day napping and relaxing, but not many people can get their dog to settle down for a nap on cue. But with a little practice and a few simple exercises, you can teach your dog to LOVE it when you tell them that it's time to go to their bed or their crate and enjoy a little down time.
In our latest YouTube video, we provide lots of tips about how you can easily do this at home with your dog:
This is so invaluable when you're dealing with house-guests, holiday parties, or travel. It's handy when you're dealing with people or deliveries at the front door, when you're cooking or decorating, or when you just need a moment to lie down and take a break from all the action!
It's also very handy for everyday living, and makes it easy to keep your dog safe, keep them from getting into trouble, and include them on trips or at events that might not otherwise be suitable. A dog that will settle down on cue is going to be welcome pretty much anywhere!
Obviously, it's still essential that you make sure your dog gets plenty of physical and mental stimulation, and there's a limit to how long your dog will want to settle down for at a time, but with a little preparation and a few training games you can teach your dog to enjoy settling down more and you can teach them to do so when you ask, which is such a game changer.
A crate makes it easy to get started, but with practice you can get your dog to settle down on a simple bed or mat which you can easily bring with you anywhere you go. Just don't forget to bring their favorite chew toys!

How to deal with most of the undesirable dog behaviors that aren't caused by fear or anxiety?
It's actually pretty simple: Get your dog to Sit.
If your dog is in a Sit-Stay they aren't jumping up, running away, pulling on leash, humping, chasing, lunging, digging, counter surfing, rolling around in a carcass, stealing paper tissues, or anything else from an endless list of things you don't want your dog to do.
If your dog is in a Sit-Stay they are under control.
So, how to you get your dog to Sit?
And more importantly, how do you get your dog to Sit reliably? And promptly? And in exciting or distraction situations? And without any food treats? Or toys? Or any sort of training tools? Using only your voice?
Well, it's a long journey with a lot of steps, but even if you never reach the end, every step you take will give you better control over your dog and allow you to include your dog in more aspects of your life and improve your relationship with one another.
So it's a journey worth embarking on! This DADD is a map of the steps you would take to train a dog with a Super Sit:

Many of you have asked about children and the benefits that puppies and dogs have on their lives. Here are some answers based on research findings. Pass them on to parents and to those who love children..
Finding # 1. Children who lived with a pup during their first year of life had better immune systems than those who did not.
Finding # 2. Playing with and petting a puppy decreases cortisol and increases Oxytocin, a body chemical that promotes happiness, calms the mind and increases mood.
Finding # 4. Allowing a 3-year-old to put the food and water bowl down helps them develop self-esteem.
Finding # 5. Teachers who studied children and pet ownership reported that dogs and puppies are an invaluable aid to developing a child's self-esteem and empathy for others.
Finding # 6. Autism. One in 45 children in the US are diagnosed with autism (ASD), which is nearly 2% of the entire population of children ages 2-17. Dog and puppies were found to offer the following benefits:
